SAP translation is an extremely complex undertaking that follows its own rules. Ensuring that all relevant content –but nothing more – is translated using exactly the right SAP terminology. Why SAP translation? 

When rolling out SAP to a location abroad, the question of translations often arises at a very early stage. German user interfaces are not an option for countries outside the DACH region, but even the log-in language English is often only an emergency solution, because not all locations can be expected to have sufficient knowledge of English. However, if Customizing and in-house developments are available in the local language, the system will be much better accepted by users and you will be more flexible when hiring new employees locally. So the subject of translation should be planned from the very beginning. 

Initial analysis and scoping 

The first thing to do in any project is to find out what kind of project scope we are dealing with. We therefore perform an initial analysis and determine how many lines of Customizing tables, forms and ABAP in-house developments need to be translated – in your own as well as in the SAP namespace. In the next step, the scoping, we work with you to determine what exactly should and should not be translated, and we check which tools are suitable for your project. After scoping, we then know the scope, components and costs of the project, which enables you to finalise your planning. We also offer initial analysis and scoping as separate consulting services, which we call SAP Translation Prep. 

Reuse 

Reusing translations as efficiently as possible is a key component of any translation strategy. This not only contributes to the consistency of the terminology in the translated texts, but also significantly reduces the translation costs. As a rule, every customer has at least some reusable translations available: 

• Texts imported from SAP language packages 
• Translations performed in other SAP systems 
• Other resources such as translated software documentation or glossaries 

But that’s not all – texts that appear several times in the scope can be automatically translated using so-called automatic distribution. We also use translation memory systems such as the proposal pool, the integrated transaction SE63 TM solution, or standard tools for the industry such as SDL Studio or memoQ. This enables us to translate at very low cost. 

Transaction SE63 

You can use the SAP standard transaction SE63 to translate your in-house developments, Customizing and forms. This means that a reliable, very powerful translation tool is available in every SAP system without the need to invest in additional software. SE63 is admittedly quite complex, but it offers numerous advantages: 

• SE63 provides experienced SAP translators with context for the texts they translate 
• SE63 has various functions for translation reuse, automatic translation and quality assurance 
• SE63 enables the maintenance of translations – crucial, for example, when upgrading or updating translations where source texts have changed 

We recommend that you use transaction SE63 as a starting point for most SAP translation projects and provide enhanced functions in the form of your own additional tools. 

SAP Translation Hub 

The latest tool for SAP translations is the SAP Translation Hub, which has been on the market since the end of 2016. This solution gives you access to a huge repository of original translations of SAP products. With the SAP Translation Hub, short texts, especially user interfaces developed in-house, can be automatically pre-translated – the translator then just has to check them and adapt them if necessary. This saves considerable effort and costs, especially for larger SAP translation projects, which makes the SAP Translation Hub a crucial component in your SAP translation strategy.
